| he seventh place by Portuguese Manuel Cardoso behind victor Tyler Farrar (GRM) in Madrid marked a solid final point for FOOTON-SERVETTO-FUJI as the 65th edition of the Vuelta a España was closed down today with the overall triumph by Vincenzo Nibali (LIQ), his first gran tour win over Spaniard Ezequiel Mosquera (XAC) and slovakian Peter Velits (THR). The Gold Generation, which completed the Spanish course with seven out of nine riders taking part in the opening TTT in Sevilla -only David Vitoria and Arkaitz Durán had to give up from the race-, went onto the podium three times across the race with team stage victories, making part of up to seven main breakaways and showing bravery and positive spirit throughout the three weeks of racing. The overview by the team’s Sports Director Joxean Fernández Matxin was m ainly positive due to that.”I’d consider this exam passed by my riders at the end of the Vuelta,” said the lead DS of FOOTON-SERVETTO-FUJI. “It’s true we went well through the sprints and had many appearance in the breakaways, but you can’g give a high mark to your squad if they don’t really deserve it. We live in a sort of cycling which is extremely competitive and we couldn’t take a victory, but I don’t want to seem specially tragic on that. The lads were brave, took on front, left a good impression and we only missed the stage win. We based our work in the race on an attacking strategy, with young riders that did a good work and that’s way I’m content with them. Regarding the race itself, you may say i already bet for Nibali beforehand, but anyone could have won this. Mosquera is a rider the race owes a lot to, because he was really valiant and thus turned into the sym bol of the race. Purito was strong in the first part of the race and Antón would have been a deserved winner if he didn’t have had that crash; he’ll be still missing that effective stroke to show his value. In general we saw big cycling moments, specially because of the duo playing for the win, and Nibali imposed himself probably because of his focus on course.”
Golds again strong behind winner Ulissi at Prato
Italian youngster Diego Ulissi (LAM) took his first every victory as professional rider by outsprinting Michele Scarponi (AND) and Alessandro Proni (ACA) in the 65th GP Industria e Commercio di Prato (UCI 1.1), held on Sunday over a 178km course in the heart of Tuscany, including eight ascents to the Carmignano climb. Ulissi took advantage from several attacks in the decisive 11-rider break in the finale to surprise the group, in a day where FOOTON-SERVETTO-FUJI showed pretty active in all phases of the race. The Gold G eneration controlled the tempo on the bunch in the opening attacks and even sent Ermanno Capelli ahead for some kilometers, making part of an 8-man group neutralized halfway. In the late moves, and after losing the definitive break, the lads directed by Daniele Nardello unsuccessfully tried to bring the split down as they made the break get back to 35 seconds before eventually going for good, despite furious attempts by climbers Arkaitz Durán and Markus Eibegger.
