THE ETAPE DU TOUR MONDOVELO 2010

Sunday 18th July

Pau – Col du Tourmalet

181 KM

10,000 riders started the 18th Etape du Tour Mondovélo at 7 am from the Boulevard des Pyrénées in Pau from where they enjoyed a magnificent view of Pic du Midi. Their objective: the Tourmalet pass after a 181 km-long route.

On the route, 3 mythical Pyrenean passes that celebrate 100 years of bicycle races: Marie-Blanque, Soulor and the 19km-long (with an average height difference of 7.4%) Tourmalet pass for the ultimate effort.

In this region boasting countless cycling enthusiasts, spectators were already packed on the roads and sidewalks of Oloron, Argelès-Gazost and Luz-Saint-Sauveur to see the first amateur riders take up this challenge 4 days before the pros.

Some riders already broke away at the beginning of the race. This group was caught up in the Soulor pass before another group of 10 riders broke away at the foot of the Tourmalet pass.

Jean-Christophe Currit slowly established his lead in the last kilometres of the Tourmalet pass and eventually won the race in 5 hours 59 minutes and 10 seconds. Young rider Matthieu Jeanne arrived 2 minutes later followed by professional rider Arnaud Labbe (Cofidis).

For the third consecutive year Magdalena De Saint Jean reached the highest step of the ladies’ podium (6h30m35s) before Karine Saysset and Myriam Saugy.

TOUR DE FRANCE 2010 : LE GRAND DEPART DE ROTTERDAM

Press release: Rotterdam colours yellow!

Since last week Rotterdam is home to another special Tour de France gimmick! Along the Posthumalaan in Rotterdam, 25 bicycle-shaped bicycle stands will be positioned. These were designed specially for the Tour de France by Peter Hopman from Bureau Lakenvelder. It is the umpteenth French facelift that the city has undergone in recent months. In practically the whole city it is becoming very apparent that the Tour de France is starting in town.

Yellow city centre

‘Can you feel the Tour yet?’ Ofcourse you can! How could you not with the many activities surrounding Le Grand Départ Rotterdam 2010? There are the larger projects such as the quotes from cycling greats on the side of buildings throughout the city (Studio VollaersZwart), the large traffic sign pointing in the direction of Paris on the side of the Nationale Nederlanden building (Mothership). Then there are the billboards, stickered garbage trucks, 150 pyramids of yellow geraniums with abstract statues of cyclists, 400 plant dishes with yellow tulips, 650 banners with the Tour logo and stickers on the bike paths along the prologue. The feel of Hofplein has been transformed into the Tour; four huge abstract bicycles with riders in the colours of the jerseys are placed around the fountain among the yellow plants. And last, but not least, the Hofplein fountain, the Erasmus bridge and the Euromast are coloured yellow by night!

Also remarkable are the large and small individual initiatives. The five meter high pictures along the façade of the Gooilandsingel at Charlois. Or the mosaics of cyclists, done by elementary schools in Charlois and the bike couriers in the official Grand Départ cycling shirts. Even a tank at the Vopak Terminal Laurenshaven is decorated in Tour-style, no less than 540 m2. Rotterdam has adopted as ‘couleur locale’ the Tour de France. The city is ready for an arrival in style for the cyclists, their entourage and all the fans.

QUICK STEP CYCLING TEAM

TEAM QUICK STEP DOMINATES THE SECOND STAGE OF THE TOUR WITH SYLVAIN CHAVANEL AND JEROME PINEAU

Stage, yellow jersey, green and polka dot in an historical stage for the team

05.07.2010 Spa Sylvain Chavanel maglia gialla e Jerome Pineau maglia a pois

July 5th, 2010 – Today, Monday, July 5th, QUICK STEP turned in a masterpiece performance on the roads of the Grande Boucle. The QUICK STEP tandem made up of French riders Sylvain Chavanel and Jerome Pineau dominated the second stage in the Tour de France, which took place entirely on Belgian territory across the Ardennes, covering a total of 192 km from Brussels to Spa. The French pair enjoyed a long break-away that started just 10 km into the race and included a line-up of 6 other fugitives, but the two Frenchmen were the major players in this difficult stage that featured wind, rain and several falls in the final.

With about 20 km to go to the finish Chavanel said good bye to his companions in the break and took off in a solitary attack towards the finish line like only a great rider could, capturing the stage victory as well as the yellow jersey as leader in the general standings. With today’s performance Chavanel also captured the green jersey for the points standings and took the lead in the special standings reserved for the most combative riders.  Today Chavanel took revenge on the Belgian roads after last April’s unlucky fall in the Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

“It was a terrific race – explains Chavanel – To win on Belgian roads for a Belgian team and to have the honour tomorrow of riding into France wearing the yellow jersey is a dream come true for me. I still haven’t realised what I’ve accomplished. This year I had a difficult moment, perhaps the worst in my career, after the terrible fall in the Liège-Bastogne-Liège but this victory has repaid me for all my past suffering.  I only found out after the finish line about what had happened behind me, with the fall of the group towards the end. Sometimes in life you’re just in the right place at the right time and I was ready for my moment. On the down hills I was very careful and then I just concentrated on pedalling, giving it my all until the finish line.”

Now Chavanel commands the general standings with a 2’.57’’ lead over Switzerland’s Fabian Cancellara. “I hope to wear this jersey for as long as possible – continues Chavanel – In the next few days there are stages adapted to sprinters and with the help of the team I should be able to hang on to the jersey.”

The QUICK STEP colours completed this historic success with the polka dot jersey worn by Jerome Pineau, which distinguishes the best climber in the group.

“I’m thrilled – says Pineau – Sylvain and I had a great race. If I captured the polka dot jersey Chavanel also gets some credit, since not only did he win the stage, he helped me on all the mountain grand prix. In the Giro d’Italia we won two stages, one of them I won and I worn the red jersey for a few days; here at the Tour de France history is repeating itself, actually, we’re doing even better and let’s hope it stays that way.”

Chavanel and Pineau were greeted with open arms at the finish line by the great Eddy Merckx. Tomorrow Chavanel will take to the starting line for the third stage from Wanze to Arenberg Port du Hainaut with a special Eddy Merckx bike painted yellow for the occasion.

Press release: Beautiful emotional farewell of the Tour on the overcrowded Erasmus Bridge

Magnificent emotions on the Erasmus Bridge where the platoon, after a ride around town, stops at midday for the last official event in Rotterdam. The Marine’s Chapel of the Royal Navy plays the Marseillaise and the Wilhelmus, mayor Aboutaleb thanks everyone in his team, some need to brush away their tears. Also Christian Prudhomme has a lump in his throat. The president of the Tour has enjoyed immensely all that the city  has offered over the last few days. Even now the departure of the first stage is made into an incomparable happening.

Ahmed Aboutaleb, Christian Prudhomme and Jan Peter Balkenende cut the ribbon, assisted by yellow jersey wearing Teun van Vliet. The president of the Tour does not want to leave Rotterdam, he jokingly exclaimed, but there is no way around it. With a friendly smile and a heartfelt ‘merci beaucoup’. On and around the Eramsus Bridge it is packed with people. Attendance today accrues the number of visitors of Le Grand Départ Rotterdam 2010 to nearly one million!
